Ambassador Mary Ann Peters joined The Carter Center as its Chief Executive Officer in 2014, providing vision and leadership and overseeing program implementation and operations. The Carter Center is a global not-for-profit institution founded in 1982 by former President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter to advance human rights and alleviate suffering among the world’s poorest people.

Ambassador Peters spent more than 30 years as a career diplomat with the U.S. Department of State. From 2000 to 2003, she was U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, leading the mission in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks. She received a Presidential Meritorious Service Award in 2003 for her work in Bangladesh. Her other overseas posts include Ottawa, Sofia, Moscow, Mandalay, Yangon and Frankfurt.

In addition to her work as a diplomat, Ambassador Peters served as Provost of the U.S. Naval War College, as well as Dean of Academics at the College of International and Security Studies at the Marshall Center for Security Studies in Germany. Ambassador Peters also served in the White House as director for European and Canadian affairs at the National Security Council. Earlier she served as deputy assistant secretary of state with oversight responsibility for U.S. relations with 19 Western European countries and Canada.

Ambassador Peters holds a Bachelor of Arts from Santa Clara University and a Masters of International Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Women in International Security and serves on the Boards of the Cetana Educational Foundation and the Task Force for Global Health.
